How to connect lightning protection to a distribution box

Distribution boxes should be protected by surge protection devices (SPDs) installed close to the power supply, properly grounded, and connected with short, low-impedance conductors to ensure effective lightning protection.SPD Placement and ConnectionSurge protection devices (SPDs) must be installed at the point where cables enter the distribution box to prevent surges from propagating into the system. Type I SPDs are used for direct lightning current protection and should be installed upstream or downstream of the electricity meter if the building has external lightning protection or overhead line feeds. Type II SPDs are installed in sub-distribution boards to limit voltage to below 4 kV, or in the main distribution board if no external protection exists . SPDs should be connected using short, straight conductors to minimize inductance and voltage drop. The connection should ensure that the surge current is efficiently diverted to earth without affecting downstream equipment .Grounding and BondingThe grounding conductor of the SPD must be connected to the main earthing system of the building. For distribution transformers, the arrester ground can be integrated with the steel tank and mounting bracket, providing a low-impedance path for lightning currents . All metallic parts of the distribution box should be bonded to the same grounding system to prevent potential differences during a surge event .Fuse and Overcurrent ProtectionSPDs require overcurrent protection to prevent damage during short circuits or overloads. This can be achieved using fuses (F1/F2) or circuit breakers. Fuses should be rated according to the SPD manufacturer's specifications and the system's maximum current. Integrated fuses in SPDs are also acceptable .Best PracticesMinimize conductor length: Short leads reduce voltage drop and improve protection efficiency.Install SPDs as close as possible to the power entry point: This ensures early diversion of surges.Use proper cable sizing: Ensure conductors can carry the maximum expected surge current.Protect against wildlife and environmental hazards: Use guards or covers to prevent accidental contact or damage .Follow IEC 62305 standards: Ensure compliance with lightning protection levels (LPL I–IV) and risk assessment guidelines . By following these methods, distribution boxes can be effectively protected from lightning-induced surges, ensuring safety for both equipment and personnel.
