The basic parameters of an optical power meter include center wavelength, power range, sensor type, calibration, and zero offset.Key Parameters1. Center Wavelength The center wavelength is critical because the sensor's response varies with wavelength. Optical power meters must be set to the wavelength of the light source being measured, typically in nanometers (nm), to ensure accurate readings. For example, measuring a 1550 nm laser requires setting the meter to 1550 nm to match the sensor's responsivity . 2. Power Range (Maximum Optical Power) The power range defines the minimum and maximum optical power the sensor can measure accurately. Exceeding the maximum can damage the sensor, while measuring below the minimum may result in noise-dominated readings. Some meters include adjustable attenuators to extend the measurable range . 3. Sensor Type Optical power meters use different sensors depending on the application:Photodiodes for low-power measurements, offering high sensitivity.Thermal sensors for high-power measurements, robust against intense light.Pyroelectric detectors for pulsed or modulated light sources . 4. Calibration and Responsivity Meters are calibrated using traceable standards to ensure accuracy. Calibration is wavelength-dependent, so the meter must be configured to the correct wavelength. Some meters store calibration data in modules or internal memory for specific detectors . 5. Zero Offset (Dark Current) Zero offset accounts for the sensor's baseline signal when no light is present. Properly setting the zero offset ensures that measurements reflect only the optical power of the light source, not the sensor's inherent noise . 6. Display and Measurement Units Optical power meters display readings in watts or decibel-milliwatts (dBm). Some meters provide additional features like averaging, peak detection, or integration for pulsed signals . 7. Response Time and Accuracy The speed at which the meter responds to changes in optical power and its measurement accuracy are important for dynamic or precise applications. Faster response times are needed for pulsed or modulated signals, while accuracy depends on sensor quality and calibration . These parameters collectively ensure that an optical power meter provides reliable and precise measurements for fiber optic systems, lasers, and other optical devices.
