Fiber Optic Cable Splice Color Code Sort

The TIA-598-C standard defines a 12-color sequence for fiber optic cables: Blue, Orange, Green, Brown, Slate, White, Red, Black, Yellow, Violet, Rose, and Aqua.Standard 12-Fiber Color SequenceUnder the TIA/EIA-598-C standard, each individual fiber in a cable is color-coded to facilitate identification during splicing and termination. The standard 12-color sequence is:BlueOrangeGreenBrownSlate (Gray)WhiteRedBlackYellowVioletRose (Pink)Aqua (Light Blue) For cables with more than 12 fibers, this sequence repeats in groups, often organized into tubes or ribbons for easier identification .High-Fiber-Count CablesIn cables exceeding 12 fibers (e.g., 48, 96, or 144 fibers), a “Tube and Fiber” system is used:Each buffer tube is assigned a color from the 12-color sequence.Fibers inside the tube also follow the same 12-color sequence. For example, in a 144-fiber cable, Fiber #45 would be the 9th fiber in the 4th tube (Brown tube, Yellow fiber) according to the TIA-598-C counting method .Ribbon and Loose-Tube CablesRibbon cables: Fibers are arranged side-by-side in ribbons, and each ribbon follows the 12-color sequence. Multiple ribbons repeat the sequence for higher fiber counts .Loose-tube cables: Each tube contains fibers following the 12-color sequence, and the tubes themselves are color-coded for identification. For more than 12 tubes, stripe markings or rings are used to distinguish repeated sets .Jacket Color CodingThe outer jacket color indicates the fiber type:Yellow: Single-mode fiber (OS1/OS2)Orange: Multimode fiber (OM1/OM2)Aqua: Laser-optimized multimode fiber (OM3/OM4) This allows technicians to identify fiber types without opening the cable .Practical Use in SplicingDuring splicing:Fibers are matched by color to maintain proper connections. In high-density closures, color coding ensures accurate fiber management and prevents misconnection.Standardized color coding reduces installation errors and speeds up maintenance in enterprise, data center, and telecom environments . By following the TIA-598-C color standard, technicians can reliably identify, splice, and manage fibers across different cable types and high-fiber-count installations.
