Entrance Facilities (EF) This is the demarcation point where external service provider cabling connects to the internal network. It includes cables, protection devices, grounding systems, and termination points, ensuring secure and reliable connectivity between the outside network and the organization's internal infrastructure . 2. Equipment Room (ER) The equipment room houses core network hardware such as servers, switches, routers, and PBXs. It serves as a central distribution point for the structured cabling system and often contains fiber distribution frames and patch panels. Proper cable management, grounding, and environmental control are essential here . 3. Backbone Cabling Also called vertical cabling, backbone cabling connects entrance facilities, equipment rooms, and telecommunications rooms. It provides high-capacity pathways for data, voice, and video transmission, typically using fiber optic or high-performance copper cables . 4. Telecommunications Room (TR) A telecommunications room, or closet, is where backbone cabling connects to horizontal cabling. It houses intermediate distribution frames (IDFs), switches, and other networking equipment, serving as a central point for managing and distributing network connections to different areas of a building . 5. Horizontal Cabling Horizontal cabling runs from the telecommunications room to individual work areas. Work Area The work area is where end-user devices, such as computers and telephones, connect to the network.
