Aerial optical cables are primarily self-supporting (ADSS, Figure-8) or catenary types, with OPGW used in high-voltage power line applications.Self-Supporting Aerial CablesSelf-supporting cables are designed to span long distances without additional support, making them ideal for areas without existing messenger wires. The most common types include:ADSS (All-Dielectric Self-Supporting) Cables: Made entirely of non-metallic materials, ADSS cables can withstand high-voltage environments, resist electromagnetic interference, and support their own weight over spans up to 1000 meters. They are widely used in overhead power transmission systems and areas prone to lightning strikes or large spans between poles .Figure-8 Cables: Named for their cross-sectional shape resembling the number 8, these cables have a messenger wire integrated with the optical fibers, providing high tensile strength and durability. Variants include GYTC8S, GYXTC8Y, and GYXTC8S, which differ in fiber protection methods, water resistance, and mechanical strength .Catenary Aerial CablesCatenary cables are suspended on an existing support wire (messenger wire) and are suitable when a pre-installed line is available.
